How Consolidated Moving Costs Are Calculated
Long-distance consolidated moving costs are typically based on the total cubic feet (ft³) your items occupy in the truck, not weight. Each item is assigned an average volume using standard moving inventory estimates, then multiplied by a per cubic foot rate.
Consolidated Moving Cost Table (Long Distance)

|---|---|---|---|
| Small Box | 1.5 | $5.50 | $8.25 |

Is a Move-Price Estimate a Binding Quote or a Range?
A Move-Price estimate is a non-binding price range, not a guaranteed final price. It shows what a typical long-distance move with your inputs usually costs in 2026.
- Binding quote: The mover guarantees the price (or a "binding not-to-exceed" cap).
- Non-binding estimate: The final price is based on actual volume (cubic feet), services, and distance after loading.
Move-Price currently presents its output as an instant estimate, which in the moving industry is typically a range that can change once the mover inspects your belongings.
How Does Move-Price Calculate Long-Distance Moving Costs?
Move-Price uses the following factors to calculate a long-distance moving estimate:
- Origin and destination – The driving distance between your old and new ZIP codes, and the destination region.
- Home size – Number of bedrooms or rooms, which correlates to shipment volume.
- Estimated volume (cubic feet) – From your home size and how furnished it is, or from an item-by-item inventory.
- Selected services – Packing, storage, and furniture assembly.
- Move date – Peak dates (May–August, on the 1st and from the 25th to month-end) cost more.
- Stairs – Flights of stairs at pickup and delivery.
The calculator combines these inputs to produce a price range that reflects industry averages for long-distance moves in 2026.
Step-by-Step: How the Move-Price Estimate Works
- You enter your moving date, origin ZIP, and destination ZIP.
- You select your home size (e.g., 1-bedroom, 2-bedroom, 3+ bedrooms) and how furnished it is, or list your items.
- You choose additional services (packing, storage, furniture assembly) and flights of stairs.
- The calculator estimates shipment volume (cubic feet) as a low–high range.
- It applies volume and mileage rates for your distance and date, then adds service fees to generate a price range.
- You see the estimate instantly on the page, without needing an account.
For long-distance moves, the final price is usually set by the carrier based on actual volume (cubic feet) and services, not the initial estimate.
What Affects Your Long-Distance Move Price on Move-Price?
| Factor | How It Affects Price |
|---|---|
| Distance | Moves under 500 miles add a per-mile charge; 500+ miles are priced per cubic foot |
| Home size | More rooms = more cubic feet = higher cost |
| Shipment volume | Larger cubic footage = higher cost |
| Destination | Long-distance per-cubic-foot rate depends on the destination region |
| Services | Packing, storage, and furniture assembly are added to the base price |
| Move date | Peak dates (May–August, on the 1st and from the 25th to month-end) cost more |
| Stairs | Each flight of stairs at pickup or delivery adds a flat fee |
These are the same factors that professional long-distance movers use to price moves.
The Move-Price Formula and Rates
Every estimate starts with shipment volume. With the quick estimate, volume comes from your home size and how furnished it is, plus extra space for a garage or patio. With the inventory calculator, it is the sum of the cubic feet of each item you list (for example, a 3-cushion sofa is counted as 35 cu ft and a queen bed as 65 cu ft). The low end of the range uses your volume; the high end allows for a fuller home.
Price = volume × volume rate (+ miles × mileage rate for moves under 500 miles) + services. Rates are higher on peak dates and for moves to or from California. Long-distance rates depend on the destination region, and because long-distance moves are often consolidated with other shipments, the estimate applies a minimum volume of about 300 cu ft.
| Move distance | How it is priced | Rate range |
|---|---|---|
| Under 500 miles | Volume rate + mileage | $1.20–$2.00 per cu ft, plus $2.50–$3.00 per mile |
| 500 miles or more | Volume rate by destination region | $5.50–$7.00 per cu ft |
Services added to every estimate
| Packing | Charged per box packed |
| Stairs | Flat fee per flight, at pickup and at delivery |
| Furniture assembly | $30–$75 |
| Storage | Priced by the storage unit size that fits your home |
How Distance Is Measured
Move-Price converts your origin and destination ZIP codes to map coordinates, then requests the driving distance from OpenStreetMap-based routing services. If routing is unavailable, it falls back to the straight-line distance multiplied by 1.2 to approximate road miles.
How State Average Move Distances Are Calculated
Each state guide shows an average move distance. It is a weighted average of the three kinds of move people in that state make, using U.S. Census ACS 2016–2020 county-to-county migration flows:
Average move = % within the same county × local distance + % to another county in the state × in-state distance + % to another state × out-of-state distance
- Local distance: half the square root of the state’s average county land area (2023 Census Gazetteer), roughly half the width of a typical county.
- In-state distance: the average distance between county population centers (2020 Census) for moves to another county in the same state, weighted by how many people made each move.
- Out-of-state distance: the same calculation for moves from each county in the state to counties in other states.
- Straight-line distances are multiplied by 1.2 to approximate road miles.
The in-state and out-of-state distances also set each state guide’s average local and long-distance mover estimates and its average truck rental price.
Is the Move-Price Calculator Free and Do I Need an Account?
Yes. The Move-Price moving cost calculator is free to use and does not require you to create an account or enter your email to see an estimate. You can get an instant moving cost range directly on the page.
How Accurate Is the Move-Price Long-Distance Estimate?
The Move-Price estimate is designed to be a realistic range based on typical 2026 moving costs, not a final carrier quote. Accuracy depends on:
- How well your home size and items match typical cubic footage assumptions.
- Whether you include all services you actually need.
- The actual shipment volume (cubic feet) and distance confirmed by the carrier.
For binding pricing, you must get a final quote from a licensed mover after they inspect your shipment.
Limitations
- Rates are Move-Price’s own averages for full-service movers, not quotes from a specific company. Individual movers may charge more or less.
- Volume is estimated from typical homes unless you use the item-by-item inventory, so unusual or very full homes can fall outside the range.
- The calculator does not add charges for long carries, elevator reservations, parking permits, specialty handling of items like pianos or safes, or valuation coverage.
- Long-distance rates vary by destination region, not by the specific city or route.
