What a moving quote includes
Labor and truck. The crew, the truck and the time it takes to load, drive and unload.
Distance. Travel between homes. Long-distance moves are priced by weight or volume and miles.
Access. Stairs, elevators and long walks from the door to the truck.
Packing. Boxes, materials and packing labor, if you ask for them.
Furniture assembly. Taking apart and putting back together beds, tables and similar items.
Storage. If your new place isn’t ready, a month or more in a storage unit.
How to compare 3 moving quotes
- Check that every quote is based on the same item list. Your list makes this easy.
- Confirm each price is binding (guaranteed), not a non-binding estimate.
- Compare what is included: packing, assembly, stairs, fuel and travel time.
- Ask about the deposit and when the rest is due.
- For moves between states, look up each mover’s USDOT number on the FMCSA website.
- Ask what coverage is included. Basic coverage pays only about 60¢ per pound per item; full value protection costs extra.
Red flags in a moving quote
- A large cash deposit before moving day.
- A price far below the other two quotes.
- No USDOT number for a move between states.
- A “firm price” given without seeing your item list.
- No company address, or a name that doesn’t match the paperwork.
