Start my estimateEvery estimate is built from real, verifiable data sources — not guesses. Here is exactly what goes into each calculation.
We use AMSA industry-standard density ratios (7 lb per cubic foot) and state-level median home square footage data from Realtor.com (March 2026) to calculate the cubic volume of your belongings by bedroom count.
Long-distance moves are priced per cubic foot per mile. We use real tariff filings and FMCSA registered carrier rates, adjusted by route demand and seasonality multipliers (peak: May–August, off-peak: November–March).
When you use the truck rental calculator, fuel costs are estimated using EIA regional diesel prices (currently $5.18–$6.63 per gallon) and the MPG for each truck size. This is included in the truck rental total, not added as a separate line item to full-service mover estimates.
Packing, unpacking, furniture assembly, and storage are each priced as a per-cubic-foot or flat-rate add-on based on AMSA service tariffs and national mover survey data.
Truck rental estimates use real Penske pricing tables with state-specific day rates and per-mile charges, plus U-Haul and Budget interpolation, including fuel cost for the truck size and insurance add-ons.
Local moves (under 50 miles) are priced by crew size and hourly rate. We use state-level average mover rates from our state_census_data table, which draws on Bureau of Labor Statistics QCEW data.
